It's a beautiful fresh morning in Northern California. The sun is shining, the world is clean and rehydrated after three days of rain, and Hearts of Space has a brand new web site!
The transition happened on schedule, everything seems to be working as expected, and people are using the site. Thanks to programmer ALEX BURROWS and his team at BAY INTERACTIVE, and our longtime engineers STEPHEN BROSSEAU and RAINES COHEN who burned gallons of midnight oil to make it happen.

On Friday, Feb. 10th an updated Version 3.0 of our iPhone app was approved by Apple and showed up in the iOS App Store. See the description there for the full details.
https:://iTunes.apple.com/us/app/hearts-of-space/id391429572?mt=8
One small bug emerged after release affecting the sign in box on iPads. We pushed an update that fixed that to Apple on Sunday and it is now (2/15/2017) available in the app store as Version 3.1.
IN BRIEF
This version is 64 bit, so no more misleading message from Apple about slowing down your phone (it never did — it was exactly as fast as previous versions). A new approach to the player provides much more reliable streaming in difficult network situations, along with many bug fixes and minor improvements. It looks pretty much the same on screen, but there are big differences under the hood. The music should be far less subject to buffering interruptions.
FREE AT LAST
iOS upgrades have always been free, but with this version we are making the iOS app free for new users as well.
VERSION 4 COMING
Why no major changes or new features? Because this version of the app will be in service only until <FANFARE!> We introduce a completely redesigned, full-featured, super-slick "Version 4" iOS app with all the features of our main web site and more.
At the same time, we'll be launching a brand new version of our website at www.HOS.com.
We've been silent about this until now, for two reasons. First, when we started the Version 4 rewrite/upgrade project over 3 years ago, we had no reliable idea how long it would take. Second, we didn't want to create hopes and expectations for our users until we could actually deliver them.
VERSION 3 UPDATE
As the months passed, we realized that before launching Version 4 we would have to update the existing iOS app to fix problems that had emerged due to new versions of the iOS operating system and Apple’s insistence on 64-bit compatibility. That is the Version 3 iOS app mentioned above, now in the App Store.
FLASH SUNSET
If you've been streaming from HOS.com using our web application, you know the service has been very reliable. Most problems are due to mixed-up email addresses, forgotten passwords, credit card issues and...Flash updates.
Yes, we know. Like many major video sites, we are still using Flash. Despite what you may have heard, it has been an excellent streaming solution for us for the last seven years. But technology never sleeps. Our old "backend" was difficult to update and administer, and Flash was slowly but surely being replaced by newer streaming technologies. So as part of this major rewrite and redesign we decided to rebuild our backend completely using newer streaming protocols and state of the art cloud technology from Amazon Web Services (AWS). This means that going forward the service should be even faster and more reliable.
VERSION 3 TO VERSION 4
The current version of our web site has some geriatric elements and limitations due to the site architecture we chose in 2007. For Version 4 we commissioned first-class professional developer BAY INTERACTIVE and our longtime programmer STEPHEN BROSSEAU to start from scratch and rewrite the entire setup based on up-to-date web and mobile standards. We spent almost a year working on technical specifications, "wireframes,” and detailed design for the new user interfaces and new apps — before starting to write code.
WEA CULPA
We realize that some of you have had frustrating problems with the previous generation mobile apps, and for that we apologize sincerely. We expect that the Version 3 iOS update will end those issues on the iOS side and provide reliable, though still somewhat limited access to the service for the next few months. We will follow up with a similar update for Android as soon as possible.
VERSION 4
When Version 4 of the HOS web and iOS app goes into beta testing (please email service(at)hos.com if you want to be a beta tester) the situation will be completely different: there will be many improvements and new features on the web site, and aside from the necessary differences in screen design and graphic layout, the feature set of the iPhone and iPad apps will be identical to the website. Many users will only know the phone version of Hearts of Space, and never need to see the full size website.
We know many of you have been waiting patiently for this, and we're truly sorry it's taking so long. We have learned that software development is a difficult and demanding craft, and we want to make sure we deliver a beautiful and reliable suite of apps so you can lose yourself, or find yourself, in the music.

UPDATE 12/12/14: All better now, but we had to "spin up" a new virtual server with twice the capacity of the one our service provider originally advised us to use. Who knew? With cloud servers the actual capacity you get varies because you are sharing hardware with other clients. So you need more than "just enough." At the same time, we've added better "load balancing" and alert advisories to let our techs now when we are getting close to the edge and need to add even more capacity, reboot, etc.
It's a brave new world, folks. We're learning as we go...and so, apparently are our vendors!
:: SH
For the last 24 hours we've been having the most frustrating kind of intermittent outage on our web server. This also has affected operation of our mobile apps. Symptoms are slow or no loading of the site, delayed operation, or part of the service unavailable.
All hands are on deck in three states trying to resolve the issue.
Note: For those who want to know why, the problem has to do with the provisioning and configuration of our cloud servers, which are failing intermittently under load. We are working to re-spec and re-configure them now. As soon as we get the right setup, everything should be back to normal or even better.
As always, we hate anything that disrupts service and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience.

Lost in the blur of end-of-the-year holiday activity, our app developers have been busy updating our mobile apps, and our beta testers have been busy checking them out and reporting back on any issues. If there are no big surprises, they should be available before the end of the year.
For ANDROID users, we have Exceptionally Good News! With this update, the Android app will have full feature parity with iOS (Apple) at last. Y'all have been very patient and we appreciate it. The updated app also will support Android tablets — more about that below.
For iOS devices, this will be a less dramatic but satisfying update. We've installed a whole new streaming engine with far superior performance. We've added a "5 button" player control; now you can skip forward and back between tracks within a program, and also skip forward and back between programs in a channel or on a personal playlist.
The operation of the "voiceover on/off" control is now immediate and intuitive — the stream pauses, the voiceover appears or disappears, the stream continues. Nice. Finally, we've added support for the larger iPhone 5 and 5S Retina displays.
TABLET SUPPORT
We've "ported" the app to the larger screen of tablets, which turned out to be a bigger project than it sounds. We always supported "2X" mode on the iPad, but it only worked in Portrait orientation, which was inconvenient as many apps are designed for Landscape operation, or adapt to both views.
Now we will introduce the initial release of a true tablet version of the HOS app, which we are calling Version 2.5. The first release will still look a lot like a scaled up version of the existing iPhone app, but it will have improved functionality and full feature parity with the smart phone apps; it will support both portrait and landscape orientation; and it will show up when you search for "Hearts of Space” from a tablet in the App Store and Google Play store.
As soon as this initial tablet version of the HOS app is released we will immediately begin work on Version 3 of the mobile apps for both phones and tablets. The goal of this version is full feature parity with our web site. That means 100% archive access to all programs and albums, display of all supporting content, the ability to make and edit personal playlists and favorites, and full account management features. Squeezing all that functionality into an app (vs. a browser) is a big challenge, but we are committed to doing it.
As always, we invite and appreciate your comments right here (please note that they are moderated due to comment spam, so they don't show up immediately), or by email to help(at)hos.com.

...now it's up to you to tell us about any individual issues so we can fix them!
To do this, log in and take your new MY ACCOUNT page for a test drive.
See how easy it is to verify and update your account, particularly your billing info.
We need this because some subscriptions and some credit and debit
card data did not transfer to the new system. Rest assured: this was due
to unavoidable mismatches between the two secure databases,
not any security problem.
By making sure your account has both your subscription and your
payment card ready, you can avoid those annoying 30 second
samples, now and when your recurring access plan is up for renewal.
Filling in your billing info will insure continuous access to your
subscription.
Here's a quick guide to HOS My Account symptoms and fixes...
• Your sign in doesn’t work (“Please try again”) or, reset password doesn’t recognize your email.
Let us know you can’t find your account. We’ll find it and get it working again. Some folks signed up after the old system was not supposed to make new accounts anymore. The new system has to be updated manually. Let us know at [email protected].
• The reset password message never arrives.
You may have registered with a non-working email address, or forgotten to update when you closed a former address. Let us know you can’t reset, and give us your actual working email address. We’ll take it from there.
• You’re getting 30 second samples even though you’re sure you’ve subscribed.
Look in MY ACCOUNT for your subscription and billing information. If your subscription info isn’t there, let us know at [email protected]. If your credit card info isn’t there, please enter it, then ask us to bring your missing subscription into your account.
• Your prepaid minutes don’t appear in the upper left of our site or in MY ACCOUNT.
Can you stream anyway? Let us know either way at [email protected].
• You just bought new access but our app or Sonos doesn’t recognize it.
This is easy — just sign out and sign in again. That updates your rights on your mobile or in Sonos.
Hearts of Space is supposed to be the anti-frustration experience. So at the first sign of trouble, write to [email protected]. The sooner we know about it, the sooner you will be happily streaming again.
Thanks for your patient understanding! :: HEARTS of SPACE Customer Support

• Password reset: fixed and tweaked.
It works well now, as long as you can actually receive the confirming email at the address you've registered with us. If not, please change your email address in MY ACCOUNT or ask us to change it for you, so when your password needs to be reset you'll be able to do it.
• Inappropriate Session Expired messages: gone!
Except for one you'll receive after resetting your password. That ends your current listening session and triggers the email. Please just dismiss it and move on. We're working on getting rid of this unnecessary message.
• MY ACCOUNT
Accessible via normal sign in, no second sign in required except as a security step for purchases.
• All subscription rights
Now working properly.
INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNT ISSUES
These have to be resolved case by case — there's no wholesale fix that can be applied. But everything can be fixed and made right. We're eager to do this for each subscriber or user who discovers an issue with their account. The two major symptoms of system transition difficulty are:
• Your sign in is not accepted, and you can't reset your password with your customary email address.
• You get 30 second samples when you should get full streams, OR you don't see your subscription in MY ACCOUNT, OR you do see Prepaid Minutes purchases you don't recognize as current.
If you experience any of these issues or any other bugs or glitches we haven't yet discovered, please report them to [email protected] right away. Please don't frustrate yourself trying to fix it or hoping that the problem will go away by itself. Let us help you resolve the problem.
When you write, please describe the symptom or issue as specifically as you can. Please include your full name or the full name on your account, and your account's registered email address. We'll research your situation and fix the underlying issues ASAP.
Thanks :: Stephen Hill and the HOS online team

Let's just say it: in the last 48 hours there have been more glitches and bugs than we expected from the upgrade to our new E-commerce and My Account software.
Despite months of careful preparation, the transition has not gone as smoothly as we planned. Too many of our users and subscribers have been inconvenienced by one problem or another. Most issues have been caused by incomplete or inaccurate data translation between our old provider’s ancient service and the new modern system we’ve moved into.
Regardless of the reason, we apologize. It pains us to know that any of you have been frustrated by this. Uninterrupted music and trouble-free service is our prime goal at HOS, and we haven't delivered it this week.
Our engineers are working through and resolving each bug as quickly as possible, prioritizing those affecting the most people. Leyla Hill is working diligently on individual account issues brought to her attention by your emails to [email protected].
We ask for and appreciate your continued patience while we make things work as they're supposed to. We thank the many of you who've sent good wishes along with your bug and glitch reports. We understand that we’ve inadvertently made you all into involuntary beta testers, and we are very grateful to those whose precise and thoughtful reports aid us in resolving the issues.
ISSUES WE'RE WORKING ON
Password reset: On Friday the 31st we did a lot of work on the new password reset process. It works well now. However, when you do a password reset, for security reasons the code kills your current listening session. That's why you see a "session expired" message. We’ll eventually find a way to get rid of that. In the meantime, if you reset your password, just dismiss the message and keep going.
Repeated “session expired” messages are blocking some of you from using the service. Our engineers are focusing on this bug now and hope to fix it soon.
Blocked access to MY ACCOUNT Information and management functions is the next bug to tackle. Again some are blocked by this, others not. Please don’t frustrate yourself trying to get past this second sign-in. It’s not something you can fix. We’re working on it.
Rights issues with cancelled, but unexpired subscriptions. It’s a server issue that has to be resolved there. In the meantime, please report this to [email protected]. If you can access Account Management under MY ACCOUNT you can reactivate the subscription temporarily, allowing you to stream music. If you can't access Account Management, we can do it for you. Then we or you can cancel the plan again once the larger rights issue is resolved on the server.
Please report issues specific to your account to [email protected] as precisely as you can. These include:
• Can’t sign in to play music or the system doesn’t recognize your email address
• You have an email address that no longer works so you can’t get the reset password message
• Your subscription seems to be missing from your account
• Your subscription renewed or upgraded shortly before the transition, but that isn’t reflected in the new system
• You get only 30 second samples of music you know you should be able to access
We’re responding to messages to [email protected] as quickly as possible. It helps if you include the email address you use for sign in if you email from a different address.
Again, our apologies. We promise to work through each and every issue as quickly and efficiently as we can.

Well, no problem. Fact is, if you have the HOS iPhone app, you can stream from the app to your Apple TV box using Apple's "AirPlay" wireless technology. And it's been that way for almost two years.
HOW COME I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THAT you ask??
Because Apple in its wisdom hides the icon that lets you know that AirPlay is ready to use. It's part of their "keep it simple" design policy, but this is one case where it really doesn't help.
The icon is only visible when you are [1] connected to a Wi-Fi network [2] your Apple TV (or other AirPlay device) is on the same WiFi network and [3] you are actually streaming something.
If all three of these conditions are met, you will see the AirPlay icon appear on the right hand side of the player control overlay that slides up from the bottom of your screen when you tap NOW PLAYING in the top status bar, or when you tap anywhere on a program playlist page. Here's what it looks like in action:
If you tap the AirPlay icon, you'll see a menu showing the name of your iPhone or iPad, plus your Apple TV, plus any other AirPlay devices like Airport Express or Airport Extreme hotspots on your WiFi network.
Choose Apple TV, and the AirPlay icon will turn blue to show you it's working. You can now stream HOS from your mobile device to your TV when the Apple TV input is selected. Sweet!
Any questions? Please email [email protected].

Ho ho ho, taxonomy/classification and UI/UX fans! Here's a little end-of-the-year feature upgrade you asked for.
We've added active links to the relevant HOS sub-genre classifications to the [PGM DETAILS] pages on the new GENRE(s) line. Now in addition to seeing which category the program belongs to, you can access other shows in those categories with just two clicks. Sweet!

IPHONE VERSION 2
Several weeks ago we launched Version 2 of
the HoS service and added some powerful new
features. The main innovation was expanding
from the single full-time "Radio Channel" to eight full-time channels.
We also rebuilt our main menu bar for easier
operation, added additional features to the
MY PLAYLISTS section, and rewrote parts of
our custom Flash web player for smoother
and more reliable operation. A full rundown
of all the new stuff is in What's New in V2?
Until March 1st those features were only available
on the web site. Now we've added those new
features and more to our iPHONE app, and the
update is available free in the App Store if you've
already bought the app for 99¢. If you haven't
tried the iPhone app yet, now's the perfect time
to cough up the big bucks and give it whirl ;-)
Our new iPhone app gives you on-the-go access to all 8 full-time channels — the eclectic All Archive Mix channel, plus seven genre-focused channels: Electronic Space, Ambient/Downtempo, Contemporary Instrumental, Orchestral/Chamber/Choral, Classic HoS Mix, World Fusion Mix, and Celtic Space.
In addition, personal playlists you create on the web site can now be played in the iPhone app.
Not only that, we've added on-demand access to programs within channels and playlists, so you can select any individual program in any of the full-time channel playlists or your personal playlists and go from there.
To answer the obvious followup question: no, you still cannot create personal playlists in the iPhone app. We had to defer that feature to Version 3. Nor can you navigate directly to any program in the archive like you can on the web site — that's also coming in Version 3. But anything you add to one of your MY PLAYLISTS is now available in the app.
So if you are determined and take the time to put all 973 programs into playlists (they're limited to 100 items each and you can make up to 100 playlists), then you can have mobile access to the entire archive now. Sweet!
Caveat user: if you make large playlists (more than 25 items) they will be very slow to load, and you will have to be very, very patient. We are testing a new back end architecture for the service that will speed things up, but for now you've been advised.
To answer the next followup question, we will be releasing a parallel update to our ANDROID app as soon as possible. We love our Android users as much as they love Hearts of Space, but for some reason there are a lot fewer of you, so our iPhone users get priority.
UPDATE, JUNE 9, 2012: Since the paragraph above was written last March, it has unfortunately become more difficult to justify the expense of releasing native Android applications. Some of the reasons are technical — Android devices are far less standardized than Apple's iOS devices, and a program that runs fine on one phone or tablet may not work in part or at all on others.
Furthermore, it is now clear that despite the large numbers of Android phones out there, only 1/5 as many people actually use the HOS Android app compared to Apple devices. Since the cost of developing it is the same as an Apple app, investing in the Android platform for a company our size no longer makes financial sense.
To solve the problem of offering mobile service to Android users (as well as other platforms like Windows Phone and RIM/Blackberry), we are now discussing developing a mobile version of our web site that will allow subscribers to run the service in the web browser of their mobile phone. There are compatibility problems using this approach as well, so we can't promise 100% support for every combination of phone/tablet and operating system like we can on Apple mobile devices. Nor can we give you a solid date for release beyond saying 'as soon as possible.'
:: SH
Our thanks to stalwart programmer PAUL YAGO for some serious midnight oil burning and even a last minute fix while on vacation! The man is driven to get it right and we love that.
MORE FLASH GOODNESS
Our second announcement is that we've launched an update to our custom Flash web player. First, the little green triangle "play" icons next to programs were too subtle for some users. They have grown up and now tell you unambiguously what they do:
You can also see which program is playing in any playlist and pause the active stream:
Clicking the CHANNELS or MY PLAYLISTS tab itself will refresh the list of channels or playlists. Clicking the PLAY icon next to a channel or personal playlist will start it playing it from the top; to see the contents of any channel or playlist, click the name.
Within any full-time channel or personal playlist we've taken a feature from the iPhone app and now allow you on-demand access to each of the programs. So in addition to being able to switch channels, if you don't care for the show that's playing in a channel you can play any other, and the playlist will continue from there.
Last but not least, we rewrote some of the hidden plumbing in the Flash player for faster operation, and also fixed several obscure bugs that no one but our ace Flash programmer ALEX BURROWS understands for sure. Nevertheless, they are gone.
Enjoy the new software, and let us know about anything you don't understand or would like to see improved in the comments or by emailing [email protected].

On December 7th we opened the next version of the Hearts of Space online service for testing by subscribers and casual users.
We've been working on this upgrade for more than six months, and there are many improvements and new features that we're really excited to bring you. The headline changes are
The full list of changes is long enough that we had to create a special illustrated page to show them to you:
If you are a "AAA" or "Radio Channel + This Week's Show" subscriber, you can use all the new features immediately! We're looking for your feedback, so please let us know in the comments or on our official HOS Facebook page.
If you are a "This Week Anytime" or "This Week Sunday" subscriber, you now have many new reasons to upgrade;-)
If you are not currently a subscriber, please look at our new offering and let us know if we've convinced you to try it! We know everyone has to justify every expenditure these days, and we're constantly trying to pack more value into the service for the same or lower cost.
One more thing: we're working on incorporating as many of the new features as possible into a free update to our iPhone and Android apps. It should be ready in a few more weeks.

If you searched the Android Marketplace for the long-awaited Hearts of Space app in the last few days, you were probably surprised to find it there!
We put it up last week without announcing it because a last minute issue came up in testing, and we were concerned it might cause problems for our Android users.
A few of our testers told us that it was taking an unusually long time to do the initial installation of the app — up to four and half minutes. In no case did the app fail to install, and it loaded fast and worked perfectly after it finished. It just took too long to get going.
Since then, around 75 people have downloaded the app and no one has reported the problem. Either they are very patient people, or what we were seeing was a "device-specific" problem. In any case, our programmer is working on a revised version of the app with a different initial setup sequence, which should end the problem for good. He's promised it in two weeks.
So Go Forth and Download, dear spacefans. The HOS Android app awaits you. See our Android special plan page for details.
ONE MORE ISSUE WE'VE HEARD ABOUT
For one early user the app failed to download completely after he bought it. This problem has nothing to do with the HoS Android app, but rather with the Android Marketplace app delivery method.
The Android mobile platform is still fairly new so issues like this apparently aren't that unusual. Many people have the same problem on a number of different Android devices including several reports on various HTC models.
Google recommends several methods to solve this problem, quote:
"You may occasionally see downloads get caught up on your phones. However, this is often a temporary connectivity matter.
Some troubleshooting tips include :
1) activating Google Talk
2) performing a soft reset or
3) using the "Force Stop" option to stop the download and then resume it again."
Here's one user report:
"I had the same problem even after I did a hard reset. I then went and activated Google Talk and ... Viola!
Not only did the download function start working, it allowed me to go back and re-download all my purchases!"
To activate Google Talk, you must have a Google account.
= Open the browser on your Android phone and go to http://www.google.com
= Sign In to your Google account
= Tap on My Account
= Then tap on Mobile - this opens a page with lots of Google mobile apps including Google Talk
= Tap on the Google Talk icon -t he Google Talk page will load.
= Tap on the "Launch Now" button - it may ask you to Sign In again (security)
= Once you've activated Google Talk, go back to the Market.
= Search for the Hearts of Space app - it should start downloading and installing.
If you have any other problems no matter how small, just email [email protected]. We love to help folk use our apps!

UPDATE: Our Android beta testers really proved themselves this week as we discovered incompatibities with certain models of Android phones like the HTC Eris. And we found one tester with a "jailbroken" phone where the app just didn't work at all. That's where we draw the line, folks: we really can't support "rooted" or jailbroken phones. Look for the finished app early next week.
Now, y'all been very patient about this, and we appreciate that.
Turns out that even when you have a finished iPhone app to model the design, building an Android app is different enough that you wind up doing 90% of the work over again. So naturally, it takes longer than you'd like, but we wanted to get it right. Thanks to our ace programmers PAUL YAGO and JOHN ZORKO, who burned the traditional midnight oil to make it happen.
The app has been in the hands of our beta testers for a week, and we've been discovering and fixing the "device-related" bugs, where it works on one model of phone, but not another. As of today we're pretty much past this, and just waiting for the last few reports to come in to confirm that everything is working as intended. We even managed to make a few improvements here and there.
If all goes well, we'll make the app available in the Android Marketplace next week. We'll announce it here in our blog, on our home page, and via email if you contacted us about the app in the past. GO ANDROID!

The first update to our iPhone app is now live in the App Store (v1.1 aka v1.01.19 — you can check your version on the 'Settings' screen.)
Use this link to download the update directly to your iTunes client and then sync it to your iPhone. Or, use the 'Updates' tab in the App Store app to install the new version directly over WiFi or the 3G network.
This is a maintenance update but it includes a number of new features in addition to many performance enhancements and bug fixes:
• New animated splash screen flies you into deep space while program data is loading;-)
• Preloading and caching of metadata makes changing between sections much faster
• Added dynamic updating and refreshing of All Archive Channel programs and This Week's Show metadata
• Added on-demand selection and play of content in Free Streams section
• Added dynamic rechecking of cached user rights. After upgrading, you don't need to log out and back in for your new rights to take effect.
• Added Sign-Out button to allow users to Sign-Out and Sign-In as a different user without shutting down the app
Our thanks to ace programmers PAUL YAGO and JOHN ZORKO, who labored long into the night making this update as good as it could be.
We are now actively working on an ANDROID version of our app for release in early 2011, as well as designing the next generation version of the app, which will include multiple "radio channels" (full time streams) and many other features now available only on the website.
Enjoy the app and please let us know about any issues or feature requests at [email protected].

Well, it was like watching the proverbial paint dry, but on October 7th Apple finally approved our iPhone app and released it to the app store. Here's the link to the app page at Apple.com. If you want to download the app directly on your iPhone, search for "hearts of space" in the App Store app. It'll cost you the grand total of 99 cents, which will buy some beer and pizza for our programmers.
As an introductory special, we've opened up access to THIS WEEK'S SHOW without a subscription. If you don't already have an account, just register for free — you can do it within the app. Once you've entered you email and password once, the app will remember it and sign you in automatically. You can use the same email address and password for free service on our main web site using our Flash player.
To use all the features of the app, you need either our "AAA" All Archive Access Plan, OR, our "Radio Channel + This Week's Show" combo plan. To keep the price as low as possible, you have to do this on our web site, not in the app.
The app has one feature that we have yet to introduce on our web service: if you have either of the plans above, you can skip a show in the Radio Channel if you'd prefer to hear something else. Just tap the >>| icon on the Now Playing screen.
Here's what it looks like (click the image for a full size view):
A BIG FAT THANKS to ace programmers PAUL YAGO and JOHN ZORKO, project manager JOSEPH JACOBS, code wrangler and API spinner STEPHEN BROSSEAU, and project nervous system and customer support LEYLA HILL. Yours truly did the graphics.
It's really nice to finally see this thing out in the world! Now, on to Android...

Sorry to have neglected you, loyal blog readers. I posted this news to our Facebook page and Twitter stream and forgot to update the blog! Here's the story:
After nine days in line, Apple rejected our app at the end of last week because we used the word "DEMO" in one section label to indicate several hours of demo music for brand new listeners. It seems they confused that kind of demo with a demo app. "Demo" and "beta" apps are not allowed!
We told them that our use of word had absolutely nothing to do with incomplete or limited function apps, but they still sent us back to change it anyway. Catch 22? You decide. Words like "trivial" don't quite do it justice.
So we redid the text references and the graphics, added a minor feature, fixed another bug or two and resubmitted the app last Sunday night. That put us back at the end of the line, and we are now waiting as patiently as we can for them to re-review. At this point I'm not going to make any predictions about when it will go live.
As soon as we have more news, we'll post it here. And on Facebook. And on Twitter...

After 9 days in line, we were informed by Apple on Wednesday morning, Sept. 22nd, that the HOS iPhone app has entered the review process. We have no idea how long that takes, but we'll post any news here as soon as we have it.

Good news. We discovered just yesterday that the existing HOS.com site with our custom Flash player WORKS ON A DROID.
Duh! We just never tried it before.
We think you have to have the latest version of Flash Mobile installed and will try to verify that. But from a quick test, everything on our main web site works in the built-in Android browser app on a late model Droid.
This means that some Android users who already have HOS accounts can just use the site as they would on their desktops. If you're not blocking popups on your phone, you can also create or manage your account.
Two caveats:
1. It's sharp as a tack but really really.....tiny. We need to build a mobile version of our web site ASAP. And we need to reformat our Flash player for the mobile screen at the same time.
2. Closing the browser kills the audio (i.e. no background operation), since the Droid doesn't know that this should behave like an audio app.
That revelation aside, now that we have finished our iPhone app, we are starting on the project of developing a parallel version for Android. We get it Droid people, your numbers are growing.
Not only that: the Blackberries have recently emerged from their slumber and have started to lobby us for a BB app (vs. two years ago on the iPhone.) It's a little daunting. We are now being transformed into some kind of specialty software developer who does an app called Hearts of Space.
We understand that this is where our growth is going to come from and are committed to doing as much as we can as fast as we can. However, we have learned that building quality software takes time and care, so please be patient.
