HOS FLASH PLAYER LAUNCHED

After over a year in development (we're still learning about software design projects) and six weeks of beta testing by about 40 of our more adventurous users, we launched version 3 of the HOS Archive service today at 11:05AM.

We sent emails to every subscriber to alert them to the coming changes and did everything we could think of to make it a smooth transition. User IDs and passwords were carried over from the old Windows Media service. Personal Favorites lists were also transferred from the old site, but this process was less than perfect.

Some people couldn't find the Favorites menu button at first. Others found they were not completely up to date when they opened the "My Favorites" playlist in the new player. Rest assured, dear space fans: all of your favorites  are still in our database and we will get all of them where they are supposed to be shortly. When the smoke clears, you'll find the new favorites display page much improved because it shows programs, albums, and tracks in one place.

A few users with unusally small screens on "netbook" size computers discovered a problem with that our beta test did not uncover: it's hard to see the lower part of the site because the top part with the larger Flash player and menu bars does not scroll up and out of the way. There are advantages to having the player stay put, but not when you have a 600 pixel high screen! We are working on a fix for this and will push it out ASAP.

We fielded several hundred emails and phone calls from users with other questions, but considering the scope and number of changes (we call them "improvements") everything went very smoothly and space fans on several continents are now happily listening to our crispy new 128kbps streams.

Please don't hesitate to email us at help@hos.com if you have any questions about the new site.

Service outage

Some of you may have noticed that our service was down for about 15 minutes this afternoon. We were here working on it, so we noticed it immediately and traced the problem to one of our three online service providers. They had been alerted internally and were already working on the problem, so service was restored very quickly in this case. For those who want to know more, read on…

Our media authorization network (MAN) provider (log in, customer accounts, credit card transactions and security) suffered a technical failure to one of their routers (an Internet address and traffic directing machine) this afternoon that affected all their customers including us — a first. The machine was saturating our domain and others with thousands of requests per minute, similar to a "denial of service" attack.

They recovered and repaired the situation immediately by rebooting the confused machine. After that hos.com was again accessible but slow.  At the time of this post, everything is back to 100% speed and efficiency. We put up a "down for maintenance" notice once we became aware of the outage, then went back to normal when the issue was resolved.

The Internet may not be "a series of pipes" (Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska)  but it is run by machines, software, and people. And sometimes they don't behave as instructed and need a timeout.

Prepaid Minutes are back!

Some of our sharp-eyed users noticed that this payment option quietly disappeared several months ago.

Long story short: we were having some technical problems with the accounts, and it looked like we would not be able to offer minutes with the new Flash/MP3 Audio player we are moving to this fall. We didn't want to continue selling an access plan we couldn't support in the future.

Good news! The technical issues have been resolved and the minutes accounts are working perfectly for current users, AND we found a way to make them work with the upcoming Flash player as well. So we re-enabled the option for users to buy Prepaid Minutes today.

Prepaid minutes aka timed usage-based accounts (vs. subscriptions) are popular with new users who just want to try the service. Some people prefer to "pay as they go" but once you find you are using the service regularly, it's easier and more economical to buy a subscription package.

We offer prepaid minutes in blocks of 600 (10 hours) and 900 (15 hours) Please see our ACCESS PLANS page for details. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to write to help@hos.com.

Hint: they make a great gift. See our gift certificate page for that.

Server failure, Thursday 2/28

The HOS web server had a hard disk failure Thursday afternoon. It took all night to repair the server and restore our files, but everything should be running normally now. We will continue to closely monitor the situation today and make any additional adjustments necessary.

We apologize for the interruption in service and are taking steps to prevent or radically reduce the time we can be down in the future.
