PGM 1023 'FALLING DARK 4' : sept 27-oct 4

Descending into the autumn soundscape, we return to the slower, darker, burnished electro-acoustic sounds of the season: cello, piano, electronic keyboards. It's a time for descending progressions, dark drones and minor key harmonies, as the music echoes the shorter days and declining light after the fall equinox.

PGM 1022 'TIMELESS STRINGS' : sept 20-27

From the prehistoric days of musical instruments, we have the flute, the rattle, and the drum; later, primitive trumpets and reeds; and from ancient Mesopotamia more than 4,000 years ago, early members of the chordophone family of plucked strings — lyres, zithers, harps, and lutes.

Stringed instruments have come a long way since then. In Europe, bowed strings were refined into the violin family we know today, while lutes evolved into the guitar. Music for strings developed along with the instruments, and Western classical music is rich with variations.

Among stringed instruments, perhaps the most versatile is the cello: a virtual solo string orchestra. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, contemplative music for strings with a focus on the cello, on a program called TIMELESS STRINGS. Featured cellists are JAMIE SIEBER, DAVID DARLING, JONATHAN HUGH, and MARTIN TILLMAN.

PGM 851R 'AFTERBURN' : sept. 13-20

Summer might actually seem endless in these globally warmed days, but eventually even the sun submits to the laws of orbital geometry, and our northern hemisphere begins to cool as it tilts away from the sun. In music, the change of seasons is marked by a slower pace, a darker mood, and a tinge of melancholy in the harmonies. With its naturally bittersweet tonality, it's a good time to revisit the ambient acoustic guitar.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an end-of-summer, mostly acoustic guitar journey called AFTERBURN. Music is by LEO ABRAHAMS, RUDY PERRONE, MICHAEL SCHMITT, DAGOBERT BOHM, FRANK SMITH, HANDS ON STRINGS and JEFF PEARCE.

PGM 1021 'DUBSHIP EUPHORIA' : sept. 6-13

Out of the ganja-fueled creative ferment of Jamaica came Reggae, and later, a studio remix style called "Dub." Spacey, psychedelic, fat with drum n' bass and heavily seasoned with reverb, echo and effects, it inspired English artists to gene-splice Dub with Ambient electronics, and call it "Ambient Dub."

On this transmission of Hearts of Space we follow the trail of Ambient Dub on a program called DUBSHIP EUPHORIA. Music is by JAH WOBBLE & MARCONI UNION, MOTIONFIELD, S7VEN, SOUNDS FROM THE GROUND, ISHQ, CYBER ZEN SOUND ENGINE+MATT BORGHI, and MIKTEK.
