The life of a political slogan is rarely glorious and always brief. Bush the Elder had a memorable one in 1988 which lingered past its natural lifespan as a weapon of satire: "a thousand points of light."

Despite the history, it's a lovely image that comes alive as we enter the holiday season and light becomes a symbol of joy and generosity of spirit. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we sound the season with a turn-of-winter journey called POINTS OF LIGHT.

If there's one quality that applies to every variety of jazz, it's great musicianship. These cats can really play, and sometimes they get so into it that virtuosity becomes the subject of the music.

But there's another tradition in jazz, famously exemplified by MILES DAVIS' classic Kind of Blue.  Lyrical....Quiet....Subtle....Spacious.  It's not about how many notes you play: it's about how beautifully you play them. As one musician says, it's about "loving every note."

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we explore a quietly intense world of melody, space and feeling, on a Nordic spacejazz journey called RESTRAINT. Featured artist is Norwegian pianist TORD GUSTAVSEN and his trio.

PGM 821 "LOVELY THUNDER" : Week of Nov. 9th...

Composer HAROLD BUDD really started something back in 1980 when he released THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR, the second album in BRIAN ENO's seminal Ambient Music series.

The chiming tones of Budd's floating electric piano, combined with Eno's studio atmospheres, created what have been called "enchanted landscapes and underwater domains." It's a sound that's still influential and popular today: accessible and enjoyable...while it quietly insinuates itself into the deepest reaches of your psyche.

This week we explore that sound, with foggy keyboards and dark ambient electronics for fall, on program called LOVELY THUNDER. Music is by HAROLD BUDD, RUBEN GARCIA, A PRODUCE, MICHAEL JON FINK, and DWIGHT ASHLEY.

The origins of the Central Asian tradition of harmonic chanting or "overtone" singing are lost in time, but are alive today both in source cultures like Tuva and Tibet, and in the work of experimental singers and composers. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey into the ghostly, floating world of harmonic singing, with music by TRIO MEDIAEVAL, CHARLES B. KIM, JIM COLE, SEATTLE HARMONIC VOICES, and the DEEP LISTENING BAND.
