PGM 819 "BLACKWATER" : Week of October 26th...

At the end of October we celebrate Halloween, the lingering expression of the Celtic pagan festival that marked the final extinction of summer. It's a time when the dead were said to revisit the mortal world, and large communal bonfires were lit to ward off the dark spirits.

Today it's devolved into a commercial event for the costume and candy industries, with an unusually grim theme — while the fires, at least in California, have become a fearsome, destructive presence.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we wander in the gloomy underworlds, ghostly chambers and haunted caverns, on a program called...BLACKWATER.

As we fall deeper into autumn's cooling embrace, we arrive at a music of transition.  Muted in color, restrained in tempo, floating in space, receding...it invites us to contemplate the eternal cycles of nature from a point of sonic equilibrium  within them.

PGM 818 "AN AUTUMN GARDEN" : Week of October 12th...

Chamber music is an indoor art by definition. Yet nothing underscores the complex colors of the autumn landscape like the sound of a chamber group, especially when it includes the plaintive tones of the cello, the oboe, or the acoustic guitar.

In the fading light, the shadows grow longer, the days grow shorter, and the sounds of the season grow darker. The natural world contracts...and prepares for the long winter's sleep.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we echo the season with a chamber-electronic journey for fall called AN AUTUMN GARDEN. Music is by Italian composer LUDOVICO EINAUDI, TIM STORY, RUSSEL WALDER, HANS CHRISTIAN, KEVIN KELLER and more.

PGM 817 "FLUTE RATTLE DRUM...SPACE" : Week of October 5th...

The "archaic revival" movement rediscovers forgotten archetypes from our collective past. As MICKEY HART explained in his book "Drumming at the Edge of Magic," when we look back to the deepest origins of music, we rediscover the flute, the rattle, and the drum.

On the North American continent, the native tribes built their music on these elements — music for ritual, dance and ceremony. At the end of the 20th century, the traditional genre was transformed when new instruments were added and the cedar flute was popularized by Native musicians like CARLOS NAKAI. Along with non-native and ambient musicians, they opened up the tradition and expanded the sound to the scale of the western landscape.

With music by COYOTE OLDMAN, JONN SERRIE, JOHNNY WHITEHORSE, ANN LICATER, MARK HOLLAND, and SCOTT AUGUST, we track the gene-splicing of Native American music with ambient electronics and the American landcape, on a program called FLUTE RATTLE DRUM...SPACE.
