One of the great inspirations to brilliant computer programmers and offbeat artists everywhere is the story of brothers RAND and ROBYN MILLER — creators of the hit computer game MYST. From the first CD-ROM edition in 1993, the MYST franchise evolved through four sequels and a spinoff, sold over 12 million games and spawned six soundtrack albums, three novels, several comics, and an online version.
Inspired by Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island," from the beginning the Miller brothers blazed their own trail, setting new content and visual standards, and ultimately changing the way people played computer games.
In a world of gory, violent "first person shooters," MYST invented its own category, with immersive environments of stunning artistic quality, texture and atmosphere, and a focus on puzzle-solving in a moral universe driven by a mythic story.
The original music of MYST was the work of ROBYN MILLER. In addition to his graphic talents, he was a fine ambient/electronic musician. Subtle, deep and atmospheric, his music set the tone for the emotional experience of MYST. Sequels were scored by ROBYN MILLER, JACK WALL, and TIM LARKIN.
